About Merlin

Traditional astrology,
carefully practiced.

I am a traditional tropical astrologer working primarily with the seven classical planets and the interpretive methods of pre-modern astrology.

My interest is in astrology as a serious interpretive discipline: studying the condition of the planets, the structure of the chart, and the relationships between its parts in order to arrive at clear and meaningful judgments.

Merlin

An older way of reading the chart.

My practice is rooted in traditional tropical astrology and the classical seven-planet system.

Rather than beginning with modern psychological categories, I start with the condition of the planets themselves: their signs, houses, rulerships, aspects, sect, dignity, and relationships to one another.

I am interested in the chart as an ordered whole. No placement exists in isolation, and a judgment becomes clearer when the different parts of the chart are considered together.

Traditional astrology gives me a disciplined framework for doing that. The goal is not to make astrology unnecessarily complicated, but to use a coherent method that can produce clear, specific, and useful interpretations.

Why traditional astrology?

I value traditional astrology because it gives the chart structure, hierarchy, and a clear method for judgment.

01

It is structured.

Traditional astrology provides a defined set of techniques for weighing planets, houses, rulers, and aspects rather than treating every placement as equally important.

02

It is contextual.

A planet is not interpreted by sign alone. Its house, rulership, dignity, sect, aspects, and relationship to the rest of the chart all help determine what it signifies.

03

It aims at judgment.

The purpose is not simply to generate more symbolism. The method gives the astrologer a way to weigh conflicting testimonies and arrive at a coherent interpretation.

Working within an older astrological tradition.

My approach draws from the methods preserved in the traditional astrological literature of the Hellenistic, medieval, and early modern periods.

I am especially interested in authors who treated astrology as a coherent system of judgment: examining planetary condition, house rulership, aspects, sect, dignity, and the relative strength of different testimonies in a chart.

Among the astrologers who have influenced my study are Ptolemy, Abu Ma’shar, Guido Bonatti, and William Lilly.

I do not approach those authors as authorities to be copied mechanically. I treat the tradition as a body of techniques and principles to be studied carefully, tested, and applied with judgment.

Clear interpretation, careful judgment.

My goal is to make the chart understandable without flattening it into vague generalities or unnecessary jargon.

☿

Clarity

I explain what I am seeing in the chart in plain language and connect the symbolism to the actual question or life area being discussed.

♄

Restraint

I do not believe every chart supports every conclusion. When the symbolism is uncertain, mixed, or limited, I would rather say so than force a dramatic interpretation.

♃

Context

Individual placements are weighed within the larger structure of the chart so that the interpretation reflects the whole rather than a collection of disconnected meanings.

Conversation

Astrology is most useful when there is room for questions, clarification, and discussion. I want you to understand the reasoning behind the interpretation, not simply receive a verdict.
